Currently, the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi as well as the emirs of Dubai is descendent of this tribe. The current rulers of Dubai are the Al Maktoum family. They have been in control of the emirate since 1833. The current emir is Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Dubai came under the protection of the British Empire in 1892 under the Exclusive Agreement. At that time Dubai had strategic commercial importance as a popular port. This policy was actively pursued by the rulers which attracted traders from other trading settlements. Later, the area became known for its pearl trade.
