History of Dubai

Dubai is the second largest of the United Arab Emirates. It is situated on the Arabian Peninsula. Dubai is situated on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The country of UAE is surrounded by Oman and Saudi Arabia.

There are traces of earlier civilizations on the territories of modern Dubai dating back to 7,000 BC. According to archeologists the area has been influenced by Byzantine, Sassanian and early Islamic civilizations. The emirate was officially established only in the 19th century by the Al Abu Falasa clan of Bani Yas. Bani Yas is a tribe in the United Arab Emirates that has traditions in the area. Through coalitions and military conflicts the tribe took control of the area as well as Qatar and Khawr al Udayd.

Currently, the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi as well as the emirs of Dubai is descendent of this tribe. The current rulers of Dubai are the Al Maktoum family. They have been in control of the emirate since 1833. The current emir is Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Dubai came under the protection of the British Empire in 1892 under the Exclusive Agreement. At that time Dubai had strategic commercial importance as a popular port. This policy was actively pursued by the rulers which attracted traders from other trading settlements. Later, the area became known for its pearl trade. Oil was found in the emirate in 1971. It led to a huge migration of foreign workers mostly from India and Pakistan. After the British returned the their independence the emirate decide to join together with Abu Dhabi and five other emirates and form the present United Arab Emirates.
